I've noticed several systems in the pacific over the years where a storm 'makes landfall' and then is removed in the post analysis--do the mountains prevent weaker systems from successfully making it ashore?

This hasn't happened since I started tracking the EPAC in 2004 sans arguably one.

Yes. Dry air off the high mountains of Mexico typically disrupts systems as they move towards the coast.

In that case, didn't they have a hard time finding the LLC?

I think the fact that one agency only had T6.5 precluded an upgrade to Cat 5.

Agreed, but SAB was limited to T6.5 due to constraints. It's the Igor of the EPAC.

Both SAB and TAFB had Igor at T7.0. The only reason for no cat.5 in that case was ADT didn't quite reach CI7.0 which I think is more embarrassing than Amanda

Interesting the TD2 reports says it might have been briefly a tropical storm, based on an ASCAT pass. However, the data was not conclusive enough to warrant an upgrade, since the satellite signature was pathetic at the time (T1.5)

Hopefully with the higher-resolution quikscat replacement, there will be a little less uncertainty in these types of systems in the future. Odd to note as well that the Atlantic systems are so slow to come out, meanwhile several Pacific systems (including some of the stronger ones) already had reports out for some time prior to this.

It should be noted that the Pacific reports have been early in the season. Most of them existed before TD Two in the Atlantic.

Honestly I would have gone ahead and upgraded TD2. Yes, the satellite signature was not supportive, but Bertha and Cristobal both became hurricanes (Recon-proven) with T2.5 and T3.0 signatures.

Karina is now out. The NHC also updated Boris's report to include some wind reports from Mexico.

Karina was one of the longest lived EPAC storms in the satellite era (which never entered the CPAC).
