The Gulf still bears watching

#1 Postby Stormcenter » Thu Aug 28, 2014 8:59 pm

Despite 98L making landfall I still think we should keep a close eye on the GOM this weekend. IMO

I agree, earlier there appeared to be a small circulation where the convection is halfway between Brownsville and Yucatan.

I wish some of those storms would drift to the north to Biloxi and give us some much needed rain here because it's getting pretty dry; yards are turning brown and last Sunday it hit 100F here. 8-)

Latest ASCAT pass from a few hours ago shows a small circulation trying to form near 24/93 http://manati.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/ascat_images/cur_25km_META/zooms/WMBas63.png

Sometimes be careful what you wish for. The GOM has been known to throw a surprise now and then over the years.

Is Louisiana about to get a surprise?

Looking on my phone, I can't tell if there is rotation or not.

You're about to get some rain later today/Saturday, but it's no surprise.

Surface analysis may not reveal anything but a straight look at an early Friday morn satellite loop of the NW Gulf raises an eyebrow.

Just looked at the current loop and it does pop out at you. But like wxman said nothing going to develop and surprise anybody. Some areas around here do need some rain. Baton rouge has got hit pretty good last couple of weeks, while at my house haven't received more than a trace. Front yard is nice and crispy.

Nothing but SE winds & unorganized deep tropical moisture across the GOM this morning, this is not the year for surprises, lol.

There is not even a surface trough axis in the NW Gulf. It's just a line of storms that will be moving into the TX and LA coasts today. No time for anything to spin up.

But it's late August and there is plenty of warm water in the GOM.............just saying.

If it was going to be out there for a few days, then maybe, but it's moving inland in a few hours (by this afternoon).

Houston area OCM Brooks Garner stated at noon that an area if low pressure is starting to form southeast of Houston in the Gulf. He doesn't think anything will come of it (and neither do I) since it will be on land later this evening/overnight. It it had another day over water I would be worried

Well for what it's worth I did receive some rain this morning; not a lot but I'll take what I can get. Looking at wx radar more rain seems to be headed my way from the gulf; send me the rain. 8-)

Some very interesting things happening in the gulf today. A station south of Galveston just reported backing winds from north, and now are WNW. Deep convection has been firing near this region since the late morning hours.

I don't think there is enough time for anything to develop, but it has been fun to watch this morning/afternoon.

Some hints at a mid-level circulation on long range Houston radar:

:uarrow: I was just about to post the 850 mb vorticity analysis. It has increased markedly over the past 3 hours.
