2014 Cyclones Retirement

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Mon Sep 15, 2014 12:13 pm

I know it is a bit early to speculate, but while the Atlantic has yet to see a retirement-worthy storm, it seems quite possible (likely?) Odile will be heading for the dustbin. Agreed?

Depending on the damage (which seems heavy), Odile might be retired. I'll give a honorable mention to Iselle. It didn't do a lot of damage but I don't know how sensitive Hawaii is to retiring storms.

I think Rammasun could be retired.

I agree from the WPAC list.

No Atlantic names seem to warrant retirement as of yet.

I haven't seen a full report of damage, but from what pictures I've seen I think Odile gets retired. Furthering its case is the fact that, as of this post, she isn't done yet and can still inflict a lot of pain on people in the form of flooding.

I think Rammasun, Odile, and Iselle will be retired because all of them are now benchmark storms for the regions they impacted. They'll be spoken of for decades by locals.

Rammasun could be retired because of it being the strongest ever to landfall in China, and that, it is one of the costliest storms on record in the WPAC. This also includes the Philippine name Glenda, which caused $200-300 million in damage locally.

Odile could also be retired because of its exceptionally catastrophic effects in Baja Cali Sur, especially Cabo, and that it was the strongest in record to hit the area.

Iselle too could because it was an extremely rare occurence for a tropical storm to hit Big Island and Hawaii has a good retirement record so far.

Iselle was the third costliest storm to hit Hawaii, only behind Iniki and Iwa, so I do think retirement is likely. I mean, they tried to retire Daniel in 2006, but now that Iselle has actually MADE landfall it could be likely.

Odile probably WILL get retired. The damage seems to be crazy!

If they do get retired, the EPAC retired list will look like this:

Alma
Ismael
Iselle
Kenna
Manuel
Odile
Pauline

Both Mexico and the US may request Odile if AZ, NM and a couple of other states get hit very hard.

Definitely...

Rammasun is this year's costliest and most deadly storm over 200 deaths now...

When was the last time 2 names were retired in the same year in the EPAC or has it ever happened?

Norbert is unlikely IMO.

Not sure Odile will be retired.

Alex is still on the list and it did more damage and cased far more deaths than did Odile

Odile was more powerful and was one of the strongest on record to strike the Baja California peninsula. Yes, in amount (or worth) it is less, but there was more IMPACT, nonetheless. Alex's damage may be more significant due to the costs, but Odile's is more widespread.

and Karl was the worst for Veracruz, and it was not retired.

Mexico is very unpredictable with asking for retirement. Odile is not a certainty. They did not ask for Liza's retirement, and it killed more than 1,000 on the Baja

Meh, that is a deriative of Octave, also an EPAC name. Orchid, Odessa, Olympia and Ornetta perhaps are better

Odessa was previously used in the EPac (back in the 1960's), so there is a precedent for that. However, based on the characteristics of the EPac naming list, and the fact that Mexico would be the one most likely requesting retirement, I'm assuming the replacement will be a Spanish name.
