Julian is just as much a "Hispanic" name as Jorge. (Technically, the Spanish name is JULIÁN, but the U.S. Weather Bureau has always completely ignored any diacritical marks in other "foreigh" names on the hurrican list, so that mark over the "a" is irrelevant.)

If you have given the suggestions in the order the Weather Bureau itself has presented them, Julian is highly likely to be the replacement. I can't recall offhand where the first name on a list of suggested replacements was not the one that was picked.

I would really like to know who it is in the US Weather Service who comes up with the replacement lists and how they do it. That's never been revealed, as far as I know.

I like Julian, but I wonder if it might get confused with Julia, which is a name on this year's list. That's why I'm not sure they're really going to use that one.

I was hoping for Jacinto, but oh well. 8-)

If Joaquin is retired, it would be the first storm of non-tropical origin since Juan to have its name retired. The only other names of storms from non-tropical origin I am aware of that were retired were Alicia, Allison and Bob.

I would agree that they should NOT have Julian and Julia on the lists for two adjacent years. Unfortunately, I don't have any confidence that they will take that into consideration. The meteorologists who choose these names seem to me to not pay much attention to such matters.

Keep in mind, they replaced Manuel with Mario, which is right next to Marie. So yeah, doubt they would take that into consideration.

I was hoping they would go with something like Jason or Justin.

Good point. Sara was the first name on the list of replacement suggestions for Sandy, as was Fred for Fabian.

Not surprised that the US is making a case for Joaquin. The sinking of the SS El Faro would be enough for the US to warrant Joaquin's retirement.

Did we know by this in point in 2014 if Mexico had filled out requests to retire Ingrid and Manuel?

I don't think they publicly mentioned them until the meeting, likewise with Odile last year.

Saw on twitter that Erika, Joaquin, and Patricia have been retired

Replacements are Elsa, Julian, and Pamela

Glad to see Erika was retired. I didn't want the stigma of it 'only' being a Tropical Storm to stand in the way, considering how historic it was for Dominica.

Wouldn't that make Erika the second Tropical Storm other than Allison(2001) to be retired?

Ana and Elsa on the same Atlantic naming list in the same year that Olaf is on the East Pacific naming list? :cold: Clever, WMO, very clever.
