I was very surprised when Matthew RI'd to this category. Now that Matthew pulled off this stunt, our streak is reset. Unless a miracle occurs, the next streak shouldn't be nearly as long as the 2007-2016 steak of no C5s.

We had Igor in 2010 which was at 155mph based solely on satellite, so it's not entirely out of the question that it was a Cat 5 for some period of time, but we'll never know 100%. Also reading some of the reanalysis papers, it appears that 1955-67 was a longer streak (the four in 1960-61 were lowered in intensity).

Irma and Maria.... at least 175 mph. And we may get Jose upgraded as well. That means after a long streak we've had at least 2 Category 5's (and 3 if Jose gets upgraded) in 2017. All 3 storms accrued over 40 ACE each. Irma was a near-average season herself!

I would hope the stretch beginning in '18 will be MUCH longer.

For all we know, we may not even begin a streak in 2018.
