Reminds me of the NHC pronunciation guide for "Kyle" from a couple years ago. They say it's "ky'-ul". Really? Two syllables? is that the hillbilly pronunciation? ;-)

I like to read through them for things like that.

I think this years name list is growing old. This will be the 7th "Alberto", "Beryl", "Chris", "Debby", and "Ernesto". This is the 10th time the name "Florence" will be used. Hurricane "Gordon" should've been retired following the 1994 season, in my opinion. This will be the 6th "Helene", which I believe should have been retired following the Cat 4 Helene impacts in North Carolina in 1958. In today's dollars, that would be a billion dollar storm.

"Isaac" was a $3 billion storm and I believe should have been retired in 2012, although I guess it's alright to let it slip by. It's the only remaining original "I" name from the first set of name lists.

Overall, I think I have just grown wary of the same names over and over.

:uarrow: Honestly, I'm all good with a list that has trouble retiring names. Preferable to a list like last year's which I'm beginning to get superstitious about after '99, '05, '11, and '17.

Only four times has a name been retired on this list:

1982 - none
1988 - Gilbert, Joan
1994 - none
2000 - Keith
2006 - none
2012 - Sandy

Although I would argue Gordon (which was a replacement name in itself) should have been retired after 1994, and Isaac after 2012.

I believe Alberto should have also been retired after 1994. It was one of Georgia's worst natural disasters

Which means they are using a Spanish pronunciation.

I would bet that 100 years ago most Anglo-Americans would have pronounced it as "eye-DALE-yuh". :)

I actually have to disagree to an extent. Harold's first opportunity for use is in 2023, when a lot of millennials will be in their late 20s to early 40s. When I think of Harold, I think of the bully from Hey Arnold - and he's not a bad person, but he's definitely not the nicest either. And I think Harold would sound more menacing than say Harry, as a lot of millennials or Gen Z might think of both Harry Potter as well as Harry Styles from One Direction.

So I think Harold still sounds a bit menacing.

I think Hurricane Harold is alright. I worry sometimes about names becoming too difficult to pronounce.

For example, imagine if Irma last year had been "Hurricane Isaias". It isn't "EYE-ZAY-UH", but rather it's pronounced "ES-AYE-EEE-AHS". Would have been difficult. You would think "Ichabod" or "Irving" would be easier.

I doubt anyone’s gonna pronounce isaias that way. Most people will just say EYE-ZAY-ISS

Good point. I always laughed at how Hurricane Georges was the French pronunciation "ZHORZH", but ended up in Mississippi where many pronounced it "George-ez".

Torino wrote:I got Harold right. And since 2004: Fiona (Frances), Nestor (Noel), Ian (Igor), Irma (Irene), Sara (Sandy), Elsa (Erika) and Martin (Matthew).

List 3 has now 12 retired names, just like List 2. Just to remember, the first name to be retired from this list was Floyd in 1999.
List 5 (2019) holds the record with 13 and still has a cycle to go.
List 4 (2018) has only 4. Will 2018 catch up with the others? Hopefully not.

List 5 hasn't gone a single season without one retirement. Every single season that list has been used has seen at least one name enter the dustbin

1983: Alicia
1989: Hugo
1995: Luis, Marilyn, Opal and Roxanne
2001: Allison, Iris and Michelle
2007: Dean, Felix and Noel
2013: Ingrid

Even when they had a super El Nino like 1983 or a major dud like 2013, this list never fails to have a storm worthy of retirement.

It's also the second closest to having half of the original names leaving. Barry, Chantal, Erin, Gabrielle, Jerry, Karen, Pablo, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy. It only needs one more original name to join List 3 actually.
