#1 Postby AtlanticWind » Sat Oct 21, 2017 5:27 am

Looking back on the most active years , I could not find a season that didnt have at least 1 Hurricane in the western
Carribean. So far this season we have yet to see one pass thru or form in the WC.Nate was close but reached hurricane
strength in the Gulf. Weird

MDR (Main Development Region): 7.5–22.5°N, 75–20°W
Caribbean: 10–20°N, 60–88°W

Definitions for regions are taken from the following: http://webcms.colostate.edu/tropical/media/sites/111/2017/04/2017-04.pdf. ACE index data (in parentheses) are derived from: http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/hurdat/comparison_table.html.

Top Ten Most Active Atlantic Hurricane Seasons by ACE

YEAR (ACE)...# Hs in Caribbean (Oct or later)
1933 (259) — 2
2005 (250) — 2
1893 (231) — 0
1926 (230) — 1
1995 (228) — 1
2004 (227) — 0
2017 (223) — 0
1950 (211) — 1
1961 (205) — 1
1998 (182) — 1

Red = El Niño

Aside from 1893, 2017 is almost unique as a top-ten ACE year (non-El Niño) without a Caribbean hurricane in October or later.

It's strange because it had so much warm water over it this year and none of it was tapped into
