It's official: GOES-EAST is fully operational

#1 Postby cycloneye » Mon Dec 18, 2017 12:48 pm

Great news for all of us.

Now in its new GOES-East position, the advanced GOES-16 satellite has officially joined NOAA’s operational observation network, providing forecasters with sharper, more defined images of severe storms, hurricanes, wildfires and other weather hazards in near real-time 24/7.

“The GOES-16 satellite provided invaluable data on deadly hurricanes long before they touched the shore this season,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “As it becomes fully operational, GOES-16 will continue to monitor extreme weather events, safeguarding American lives and property from its perch thousands of miles above the Earth.”

More satelites will be up in the next few years.

GOES-16 is the first in the series of next-generation geostationary satellites, that provides valuable data in support of NOAA’s Weather-Ready Nation initiative. The next new NOAA satellite, GOES-S is scheduled to launch March 1, 2018 followed by GOES-T in 2020 and GOES-U in 2024. These satellites will enable NOAA to more closely monitor weather systems over North America, South America, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to help protect lives and property.

Sucks that we couldn't even see any imagery from SSD for Tembin.

The SSD site doesn't seem to be working at all anymore

This post was probably an opinion of mine, and in no way is official. Please refer to http://www.hurricanes.gov for official tropical analysis and advisories.

Hopefully, they expand the sectors to view more areas of the Atlantic in closeups like they did for Eastern Caribbean.

College of Dupage's GOES 16 page has a really nice eastern Caribbean satellite shot along with a wide shot of the entire Atlantic. I sent NESDIS an e-mail a couple of days ago inquiring whether additional sectors would be posted similar to the sectors we saw with the SSD site (sad to see it no longer updating).

COD's eastern Caribbean satellite page can be found at http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/exper/?parms=regional-prregional-02-48-0-100.
COD's wide Atlantic view can be found at http://weather.cod.edu/satrad/exper/?parms=global-atlantic-02-48-0-100.

Great to see that they added the Puerto Rico sector.

They need to seriously bring back the SSD site with the goes 16... the current hodgepodge of crap sites and sectors along with functionality is terrible. the replacement for SSD wont even allow to zoom while it is looping, nor can you change the speed of the loop also no RGB... the quality of the loop images is also much worse than the static images and grainy.

Special Message from NHC
Issued Dec 29 1800 UTC
The GOES-16 Satellite is now officially GOES-East. As a result, many of the webpages designed for the retired GOES-13 satellite are not currently available, including floater imagery and Atlantic tropical sectors. Please be patient while this transition occurs. Imagery for the U.S., Gulf of Mexico, East Coast, and the Caribbean are available in the links below. Please note that these images do not originate on the NHC website.

Great to see that GOES-EAST has a new sector view for Eastern Atlantic and West Africa. We dont have to wait 3 hours anymore for new images from that area.(15 minute updates)

Yes, so much yes! It was always a nuisance to see long gaps in time with the area off Africa. This will help with studying the behavior of tropical waves more closely.

Don't know about the new GOES East site. It is constantly having issues updating, especially on weekends it appears.
