The "Real" Hurricane season

#1 Postby beoumont » Sun Jul 22, 2018 6:26 am

I have begrudgingly come to realize that the real hurricane season runs form August 20 - Oct 20. A vast majority of Majors occurs during this period; with, of course a few exceptions. I often refer to 1961 when things start slow, to provide optimism that an active, intense season can still occur, having only one named storm through the end of August. After that 2 cat 5s, 2 cat 4s, : note the max winds of each.

Here is a plot of all tropical cyclone points in the hurricane database by day of the year. There's a gradual growth in activity beginning in May that really increases quite dramatically in August before coming back down pretty quickly after October 15.

As they say, August to October is the peak of the hurricane season.
