Here's a wild thought: if the government shutdown is still going on in March, the US will not be able to send a delegation. In that case, there will be no one to make a case for Florence and Michael (as no one else has a reasonable case for them, unlike with Irma or Maria in 2017 which had multiple countries able to make a case)...and those names could survive? Unless someone else pleads for them...

Is there any rule that delegates from a particular nation have to show up in person for a request for retirement to be made?

It still seems to me that if an official agency of any country affected by a storm asks for the name to be retired, even if they normally have no representatives on the committee, it would just be incredibly rude for the committee NOT to retire it. Do you all really think the meteorologists who are delegates to such meetings are that rude and insensitive?

Felix and Noel were requested by France along with Dean in 2007 and I don’t think either storm really impacted French territory.

That's true - hopefully the government will be back open in time so we don't have to find out!

Looks like only Mangkhut will get the retirement hammer in the WPAC. At least so far. And the potential replacements for Hato, Kai-Tak, and Tembin are out.

Fingers crossed the replacement for Hato is Higashikata, Josuke, Joshu, Yoshikage or something like that

Not happening, the choices for Hato are Yamaneko, Tokei, or Sankaku according to the documentation.

Since we are finally getting more tropical cyclone reports, let's hope Florence and Michael still get retired this upcoming spring

It’s official. Ompong, Rosita, and Usman are now decommissioned by PAGASA. Their replacements for 2022 or Obet, Rosal, and Umberto respectively. For Urduja and Vinta last year, they’re now Uwan and Verbena.

It appears China made the request last week to retire Rumbia. So it looks like it’ll just be Rumbia and Mangkhut leaving.

Replacement names for Hato, Tembin and Kai-Tak are Yamaneko (the Lynx constellation), Koinu (the Canis Minor constellation) and Yun-Yeung (a popular drink in Hong Kong which tastes good IMO).

Mangkhut and Rumbia have been officially retired from the list.
