This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I'd wager more technology, techniques and knowledge on these storms has helped us to identify and classify them more consistently.

I'm leaning more towards advances in tech and knowledge over the years as well.

:uarrow: Yeah, the increase in SSTs may have to do a lot with it.

Technology and rising sea surface temperatures. Here's an interesting paper from 2013 about them: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com ... jgrd.50475 (chosen because it is not behind a paywall).

I think what made this recent TC more noteworthy than perhaps other med systems is that it was so clearly being driven by tropical processes, indeed it looked utterly textbook by landfall. Many med systems look good but with such low SSTs are probably more hybrid in nature.

Also the research makes a lot of sense. As the world warms, the high pressure belt lifts northwards meaning less cutoff lows reach the Med compared to now. But with higher SSTs the systems have a greater risk of becoming tropical in nature and stronger.

No doubt in my mind that Zorbas was a 65kt hurricane at landfall.
