A must watch account of the 1935 hurricane that wiped out the Florida Keys and the new railroad from Miami to Key West. Survivors tell an amazing and gruesome story of one of the worst weather phenomenas in history!

There was no scientific weather gauges and warnings during this era. Folks on the islands had nothing but barometers to alert them to falling pressure. Pressure during this storm was estimated at 850 at its peak! With winds reaching 200 MPH. Scores of WW 1 veterans sent by the gov to work on the railroad were killed in the storm went a rescue effort arrived too late to save them. You will NOT forget this video!

My husband, Arnold, was 8 yrs. old when he was sent to the store for bread in the 1938 Long Island Express Cat. 3 hurricane. The winds plastered him against a fence in East Islip, L.I. and he was thankfully rescued by his dad. The most powerful 'cane to hit L.I. since the 1600's according to records. Totally devastated the Great South Bay, etc. before moving to New England.

Pressures were low in this storm, but there's no evidence to suggest it went to 850mb.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

The lowest pressures were estimated based on available barometers at the time.
