Will Gamma be upgraded to a hurricane?

#1 Postby Ryxn » Mon Oct 05, 2020 11:11 am

I think it has a good shot for a post-season upgrade especially since its pressure was an unusually low 980 mb which is 14 mb lower than "Hurricane" Nana's 994 mb. It was also rapidly strengthing until landfall.

Any thoughts?

If it was up to me I would downgrade Nana and upgrade Gamma. But we'll have to see what NHC does.

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

Someone should make a poll for this, but I say yes most definitely! It had an eye-like feature at landfall on the Yucatán.

Voted yes. Not sure if they will or not but it certainly should be.

I'm not completely sure. NHC is often hesitant to make upgrades by a full category unless there is conclusive evidence to support it. A few hours before landfall, a recon plane found 68 kt flight level winds with a maximum SFMR value of 57 kt. This does not support hurricane strength, but the pressure kept falling until landfall.

I haven't found any surface observations that support hurricane strength, but it is rare to see sustained hurricane force winds with a minimal hurricane on land.
