Will the 2021 season see more than one pre-season tropical cyclone?

#1 Postby Ryxn » Thu Dec 31, 2020 4:02 pm

Yes, I say more than one because it's seen at least 1 pre-season storm for the past 6 years and it's a La Niña at the moment, so it may not be enough of a risk for a thread topic.

Any thoughts?

I'm thinking of something like 2016 with a storm in January and one in May.

Probably not, that is very rare. Most people here were expecting a December storm and it didn't happen. In fact, it's possible 2021 could end the streak of seasons starting before June, but I wouldn't entirely bet on that either.

I think at this point I'd be a tad surprised if there weren't at least one pre-season storm. I'm getting sort of used to them. As far as more than one, erm...I dunno. Can't really say yet.

Long range CFS (90 day) by April shows an atmospheric setup over the Atlantic that could allow for a pre season storm.

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

There’s already a decent trough in the upper mid-Atlantic that looks interesting. Not (yet at least) enough of a chance for the NHC to notice but the fact there’s already a little something at all brings me to believe another pre-season storm is rather likely at some point.
