Tropical Cyclone TC22P (Erica) is located 410 W of Vanuatau with winds of 55kt. It is moving SSE at 12 kt and is expected to turn a bit more to the east and intensify to 70kt before weakening to 65kt at 48 hours as it gains latitude and encounters increasing shear. The latest satellite imagery shows that the storm is in an intensification phase with both an increase in the development of a CDO and banding features.

I recieved a report from a poster at WeatherMatrix that has video of Erica as she crossed New Caledonia with winds reported at 250 km/hr!(Seems awfully high, besides isn't knots the universal wind speed label everywhere besides the US? If anyone wants me to send it to them, email me. Erica tore them a new one!!

The reported Wind Speed

#11 Postby Aslkahuna » Fri Mar 14, 2003 8:50 pm

seems high at that equates to 136kt. As a matter of fact, km/hr is the more universally accepted unit for reporting windspeed. Additionally, almost everyone other than the US uses the 10 minute average wind as the sustained wind instead of the 1 minute average wind that we use. The 10 minute wind is about 20% lower than the 1-minute as a general rule. The other units convention that is different is that most everyone else uses hecto-Pascals (hPa) for pressure instead of millibars-in this case, there's no pain since numerically hPa is the same as mb-then again who wants to use a unit named after a Frenchman nowadays. Some Countries (like the PRC[in this case I mean China and not California]) use m/s for windspeed and this is often used here in the RDT&E community.

Tropical Cyclone TC22P (Erica) is located 660 N of Auckland NZ with winds of 70kt. The storm is accelerating SE at 23kt and is expected to become extratropical within the next 24-36 hours. Latest satellite imagery shows that the system has become strongly sheared and that the transition is underway-this will be my last update on Erica.
