#1 Postby Aslkahuna » Wed Mar 12, 2003 10:57 pm

Tropical Cyclone TC22P (Erica) has been undergoing a period of rapid intensification and is now located 310 WNW of Noumea, New Caledonia. The storm now has winds of 125kt and is expected to peak at 135kt in the next 12 hours. In 24 hours, the storm is expected to begin a run just off the west coast of New Caledonia with 125kt winds before passing almost directly over the Capital City of Noumea in 36 hours with 110kt winds.

Noumea was reporting a pressure of 969 hPa and a 10 minute average wind from the ENE at 47 mph (if my geography of the island is correct then the wind would be coming off the land which is why the speed seems a bit low). A 10 minute wind is about 80% of the one minute used by the US so 47 mph would equate to as high as 59mph with a one minute average. Noumea does not report gusts but they are probably in the 80mph range if reports from other parts of the island are any guide. The eye of Tropical Cyclone 22P (Erica) is probably not too far off to the NNW at this time and passage very near Noumea can be expected in the next few hours. Erica is expected to move SE away from the island after passing Noumea and is expected to become extratropical.
