This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Does anyone know .....

#1 Postby rainyday » Mon Aug 14, 2006 12:07 pm

This could be a dumb question, but I am just curious and haven't been
able to find out any information on this:

Do recon planes still fly into a hurricane when satellite images show a pentagram in the eyewall. When looking at the photo's on the following
web site, I am wondering, do they wait for the eye to open up and then
fly in, cancel the flight or just find a safe path in? What would happen
if the opening was clear and the pentagram turbulance formed while they
were inside. I realize the eye is a lot wider than it looks from satellite,
but a hurricane is so unpredictable. Can the eyewall collapse with them
inside? I could never imagine being so brave as they are, risking their
lives for us under such dangerous circumstances. I thank them sincerely.
The following is a link about hurricane pentagrams .... with questionable
theory's, but good satellite images. Please forgive me if this has been
discussed before, I am just curious.

I don't believe a modern flight has ever been stopped because the system was too strong, if that's what you're asking.

And no, an eyewall collapse takes a bit longer than the collapse of a real wall. Even if that were to happen, it would be no different than just reentering the eyewall of the storm.

And as for that link, I think I could write a novel about the errors and common trickery they are using there . . .
