Hi all, I just purchased a Davis Vantage pro2 weather station with the tripod mount and was wondering about grounding the tripod. Has anyone done this and what is the easiest way. I have tried searching but couldn't find any info. Thanks for the help.

You would think that with a price tag of $1200 and 53 pages of instructions......there would be some mention of grounding?

If you used the AC converter, your grounded via your homes breaker box. If you went wireless.....I dunno? Suggest you call Davis tech support at 510.732.7814.

It was far from $1200, I got it for a steal at $400 and although it mentions the need to properly ground the tripod, it gives no instructions on how to do it.

A 200 amp breaker box requires an 8 gauge copper wire attached to either a 4' or 6' grounding rod. And most times when a home is hit....the charge follows a line to the ground....providing the electric grid in your home is up to code. The tripod that Davis sells appears to be designed for a roof mount installation. The AC adapter converts to 12V. Wireless is 12V. The equipment that comes with your weather station looks like it is sensitive. I wouldn't be surprised to discover that Davis suggests a higher altitude nearby lightning rod independent of your station.

How about if you use a pvc pipe to secure the station? I'm planning on using a schedule 80 electrical conduit grade 1 inch pvc pipe to attach my anemoter to the peak of my gabled roof. It will extend about 4 feet above the roof ( I know they recommend 10 if possible, but there will be enough sway with the 5 foot tall pvc pole). I have the wireless system but there is a cable connection from the anemometer to the ISS which will be mounted lower to the ground on a free standing pole of some sort about 10 away from the house. Do I still need to ground the system or worry about lightning? I plan to use a heavy duty surge protector for the console itself just in case.

I decided to attach it to my shed instead, easier, less expensive, and no holes in my roof.
