I agree that the slightly higher ground may have been a factor. Also the block/concrete (?) wall on the gulf side (which no longer exists) played a factor. I'm still thinking the VSM's (vertical support members) from below ground level to roof line prevented the home from being blown away.

I feel terrible for these folks. Apparently she is a cancer survivor and this was their retirement home. What a bummer.
