Useppa Island

#1 Postby Sanibel » Sat Oct 11, 2008 3:54 pm

Got up to Useppa Island near Charlotte Harbor Florida where Hurricane Charley tore through in 2004. You could see some of the mangroves and small islets still have obvious patches of dead trees. The musuem on the island retreat has a small Hurricane Charley section showing the damage on the small island with some shell mound elevation of 30 feet. Charley's west eyewall went directly over the island with a top gust of 176mph recorded. They were 13 days without power. On the boat ride up we saw the hole cut in Upper Captiva Island where Charley cut a 900 yard gap in the thin barrier island. The guide said that Redfish Pass, a 35 foot deep channel between Captiva and Upper Captiva, was cut by the 1921 hurricane.
