We once again are partnering to help our fellow Americans in need in the midst of another hurricane season during which several storms have claimed lives and interrupted others and left communities in shambles along the Gulf Coast. In working together for Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 South Asia Tsunami, we personally witnessed the tremendous generosity and goodwill of the American people and our friends around the world to help in times of great need. The purpose of the Bush Clinton Coastal Recovery Fund is to channel that goodwill to help rebuild essential cities, towns and neighborhoods stronger than they were before. Through this fund, we are asking you to give what you can to help ensure that these communities return, families reclaim their lives and people living along the Gulf Coast can restore the beauty and culture of the place they call home. Thank you for taking the time to visit and we hope you will consider donating to this worthwhile cause.

- PRESIDENT GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH & PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON

Ooh, do we get a telethon?

The main thinking here is that there's only been one hurricane to devastate the US in the past three years and we all know what that was. It doesn't seem to matter that Ike caused flooding and power outages as far inland as Ohio. The assistance won't come here (from FEMA) because of the fraud and waste associated with Katrina relief. Yes, many needed it...but there were those who didn't and took advantage of it.

As far as the Bush-Clinton fund is concerned:

Former Secretary of State James Baker, the fund’s chairman, estimated Gustav and Ike did $47 million in infrastructure damage along the Gulf Coast. The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund raised about $130 million.

The Gulf Coast fund already has raised $1.5 million, but the ability to raise more money could be limited because the focus of the country is away from Galveston, Baker said.

On the other hand:
Although Baker estimated Ike’s damage at something less than $47 million, [Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann] Thomas is still asking the federal government for $2.2 billion in recovery aid. At least $1.1 billion is earmarked for the University of Texas Medical Branch and the Port of Galveston.

With help from state and federal lawmakers, Thomas said she hoped the city would get all the money she asked for. And the funds likely will start coming in sooner than locals think because the needs are so great, Thomas said. Getting so much attention from Bush and Clinton will help, she said.

However, I see that there is nothing on FoxNews.com, MSNBC.com, or CNN.com about the former presidents' visits to Galveston.

Thank God for our mayor being a voice for UTMB.

Both of them were on Fox News last night. Greta did an interview with them on the beach in Galveston.

I haven't had much time to watch the news, so I don't know if it's been played at other times.

You can read or watch the interview on foxnews.com

Well, at least there's something. I just didn't see anything on the main pages of any of those sites.
