Beach may see return of gas station soon

The first sentence in the second paragraph says a lot!!!!! And when they say "the beach", they're talking the entire coastline from Ocean Springs to Waveland!!! Amazing.....

BILOXI -- A gas station and convenience store could join casinos on U. S. 90 if the City Council approves variances today that would allow Clark's Shell Station to rebuild across from the Beau Rivage.

This would be the first gas station to return to the beach since Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005. The project cleared the Biloxi Planning Commission June 21 by unanimous vote after architect Paul Ingram said the entrances will be improved, the building raised and underground storage tanks replaced.

The station at 856 Beach Blvd. would have a 2,800-square-foot building on .42 acres and have four gas islands with eight total pumps.

It replaces a gas station that was destroyed by the storm. Variances are needed because that area isn't zoned for retail/gasoline.

MDOT has given its approval to a plan to reconfigure entrances from both U.S. 90 and Reynoir Street to make access safer, said Ingram. The existing fuel storage tanks will be dug up and replaced with double wall tanks.

Also on the council agenda is the first reading for the proposed Convention Center Overlay District plus a variance for a 24-unit townhome apartment complex on Cedar Lake Road.

Accountant Bobby Culumber, who is helping prepare Biloxi's 2006 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, will report on the city finances.

The Council meets at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall.

That location "on the beach" should have been "on HWY-90 in Harrison County." Good spot for a service station. On down the beach in the forbidden zone over here in the Pass it remains slim pickings. We have one gas station open in Pass Christian currently and I think a new bar opens soon in the harbor....MGC
