Thanks for the pictures, southerngale.

On TWC this afternoon they showed an area that was pretty messed up. I don't recall the location though..

Here's some pictures taken from Cookie on a local weather board on her trip to High Island yesterday.

And a quote from her...
Cookie wrote:This one was definitely worse than Rita for the folks in High Island.
My mother and other relatives rode this one out last night and said it was the worst one they've been through. While Rita was a stronger storm, it did not impact High Island the way this one did. In all the years I lived down there, I have never seen what I saw today.

Rita hit farther east, so High Island didn't get the impact those of us farther east got. I *think* it got closer to the type of damage Galveston got during Rita.

This might change the way some people think of "just" a Category 1...

I was so busy with other things, I kept forgetting to capture radar and satellite shots, but I did get a few. Some of my images won't load to Imageshack... grrr. Anyone, feel free to add more pics.

This is one of the first images of pre-Humberto, shortly after the satellite eclipse, when he went from a tiny dot of convection to this in just a few hours. This was in the morning before he became a depression:

Great pics, thanks for posting them Southerngale! Some of that looks like f1-f2 tornado damage!

I've gone ahead and moved this to the aftermath forum.

EDIT: Never mind, moved to Talkin' Tropics instead.

I'd call it high-end EF1, and based on the damage applied to the EF scale, the highest wind gusts appear to be about 105-110 mph. (That translates into sustained winds around 80-90 mph)

Wow, did Houston get anything from Humberto?
Looks like same areas that were hit by Ivan got hit by Humberto...at least predominantly rural areas.
Most of the structural damage looks to be done to mobile homes, awnings, and other rather unstable wooden or flimsy structures. Mainly trees and powerlines...I am surprised by how small Humberto was...could be the smallest hurricane in size in recorded history!

Yeah, when I heard the rafters in my roof creaking over the hum of the AC and the ceiling fan, I knew something was up! Jumped on S2K and realized we were in for a ride!

Were all of those areas depicted in these photographs previously affected by Hurricane Rita? I wonder how the area which took a major hit from Hurricane Rita in 2005 is doing today? I stayed about a month in a very nice Marriott Hotel in a mall area in Katy, Texas after Hurricane Katrina and while I was there I witnessed all of the people on I-10 as they attempted to leave Houston and head for higher ground trying to outrun Hurricane Rita. Good pictures by the way.

North Houston got practically nothing from Humberto. We had a rainband early in the day that dropped a little rain (before Humberto was even a TD), but after that it was dry with breezy 10-20mph winds and fast moving clouds through the evening. I doubt we even had a gust above 25mph during the entire event.

Wow, these pictures are why I wouldn't even take a C1 hurricane lightly. This storm even caught me off guard, and I wondered the whole time if it would get stronger than people thought.

A great lesson from Humberto: Be prepared well in advance, because you never know if it'll sneak up on you.

A lot of those pics are from Hamshire (several from my street). Yes, we were affected by Rita also. Sooner or later we're not going to have any trees left for the hurricanes to blow down! LOL
