Here are some observations from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/MDPC.html

Puerto Rican updates:

http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/pr.shtml

"Well, Metro San Juan certainly got pounded with rain today. From my 8th floor window at work, I watched to the north as San Juan disappeared in a huge, blustery downpour. Then, as I boarded the Tren Urbano to head home, the clouds were coming from the other direction and the mountains disappeared from view as rain blew from the south. Even train stations gave warnings to be careful on the platforms as they are slippery from the rain. "Las mujeres y los caballeros: la precaución a causa los pisos mojados, cuando abordar el tren." As we are cleaning up from dinner, I can see some blue sky reappearing. It's been a few days since we've seen that. The strange thing about all of this, we are all experiencing what feels like COLD WEATHER to us. Jackets, and hats outdoors. Blankets and warm socks indoors!! No wonder! It's only 76 degrees!!

I'm sure Olga will bring lots or moisture to our neighbors, too.

Bendigate,
Eric in PR"

Dominican Republic updates:

http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/domrep.shtml

"Olga is starting to make herself known here on the north coast - about .5 inches of rain overnight but it has just started to rain in ernest. Winds about 15 knots NNE and gusting 25 knots. Surf is sounding very loud."

Turks and Caicos updates:

http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/tci.shtml

"Residents in the Turks and Caicos Islands are being greeted with clear skies, a few high cirrus clouds and gusty winds this morning. Our gaze is to the east/southeast to see what TS Olga will dish out over the coming days. Christmas shopping is in full swing. I suppose we will have to add emergency supplies and some plywood to the shopping list."

Orographic lifting will be a threat for Hispaniola. Unfortunately, it could induce locally heavy precipitation. Additionally, instability could induce more SHRA over Puerto Rico.

do they have evacuation alerts? They should just in case people
miss the warnings about flooding.
I mean evacuations for flooded areas or areas prone to mudslide damage.

FWIW, even Barbados got significant rainfall from Olga today. In fact, to me it was one of our rainiest days this year.

I understand that a feeder band was responsible for that soaking we got.

:sun: Finnally the sun came out this morning after two days without doing so.Still some rivers are at high stage because of the overnight heavy rains. But in general things are improving weatherwise and getting back to normal for the most part.

reporting from Cabarete, North Coast Domnican Republic:

was without internet till about 1 hr ago. Winds were very strong last night, blowing sand all over and we had heavy rains.

Ventured out to Cabarte center, not many major damages, except one beach restaurant (they had a tent as a roof) is destroyed. Beachfront pools are full with sand, beachfront properties will have some major clean up to do today, but besides the damaged restaurant I saw only minor damages.

http://www.drtouristtv.com/Olga/marabuafter.jpg
destroyed beach restaurant in Cabarete.

The highway from Cabarete to Sosua is ok, only some smaller trees and billboard signs down, lots of sand on some parts of the road.

I heard that east of Cabarete in Sabaneta a bridge is destroyed and Sabaneta / Jamao can't be reached, but can't confirm this personally.

Lots of problems in Santiago, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. TV and local news media report:

MAJOR FLOODING IN THE LOWER PART OF SANTIAGO DE LOS CABALLEROS

Apparently so much rain fell in the Tavera watershed that officials (?) opened the flood gates (!!!), releasing as much as 5000 cubic meters per second of water into the Yaque River. From what I hear in the local news TV, people have not been evacualted or warned before the gates have been opened, catching them totally by surprise and many died. So far 8 confirmed dead, but this number is expected to raise.

It shows that we cant minimize the threats from systems, even if they are not named. There haved been many examples of weak no named systems that haved caused tragedys. One that I saw very close was in 1985 when a Tropical Wave caused massive floodings with 85 people dead from mudslides.

From stormcarib.com:

From: carol read <carolread1945 at yahoo.com>
Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2007 17:22:13 +0000 (GMT)

I don't know if there is more to come as it is still very dark at midday, but last night we took a bit of a battering - 4.3 inches of rain and very strong winds with trees down and lots of leaf litter. It is cold too - 77f and the dogs won't leave their beds. Santiago is reported to be badly flooded and 7 people reported dead according to Dominican Today.

http://stormcarib.com/

One dead in Puerto Rico,7 dead in the Dominican Republic, and no reports from Haiti so far.

Cabarete Dominican Republic. A lot of damage here on the sea front, much repairs to do and to my apartment. The river overflowed in Sabaneta the barrios are in dreadful state and along the main Islabon road (Cabarete to Sabaneta) the people are putting out what they can salvage from their little homes to dry but even now its raining. Cant get into some of the barrios, I finally managed to get into some only last Saturday and that was after the damage caused by Noel so I hate to think what those poor people are suffering now. Im going to try tomorrow if the rain stops and keep you posted. Thank you cyloneye for all your info, my precautions didnt help at all the winds saw to that, I cant even get my door open
