#1 Postby mf_dolphin » Sat Feb 08, 2003 11:27 am

We've had a couple of times lately when the site has gone off-line. We are working with our hosting service to find out what's going on. I'll post new info as it's available. Sorry for the inconvenience :-(

Please post any occourances you run into here so we can get it resolved as quickly as possible!

I was getting an error last night a few times and just exited (in the last few minutes) the site and logged back in after a slow load onto one of the forums.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting ipowerweb technical support.
According to our System Administrators, the host server experienced a minor disruption, which might have caused your domain name to temporarily recess. Our system administrators have confirmed that the server is presently operative and functioning optimally. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this minor interruption. If you need additional assistance in the future please do not hesitate to contact us.

Let's all keep an eye on it and let us know if it happens again!

Will do Marshall...for sure! Dont you just love all the big, technical words they use in order to avoid really what they should say in laymans terms:

"Look dude...our puters crashed from spilling coffee on our server, sorry that it affected you guys...you'll be ok!" lol

Sorry for the troubles tonight. I think we have it fixed now to try and figure what caused the problem. I'll let you know as soon as we know the root cause.

Latest Update

#13 Postby mf_dolphin » Tue Feb 11, 2003 9:40 am

The latest word from our host is posted below along with my reply...more news as it's available :?

Host Support Center - Response (Stevens E.) - 02/11/2003 04:27 AM
Dear customer,

The server that your account is on was going under investigation. These test will result in improving the uptime and reliability of your website. We do apologize for the inconvenience.

Marshall - We had an occurrence last night around 10pm EST where a PHP file on our site got corrupted causing approximately 45 minutes of downtime. We also had users get a message that "too many people were viewing this page". We must get this resolved ASAP. Our sites reputation is critical and these intermittent outages are not helping our effort. Please update me with any information that becomes available.

What I think I know :-)

#16 Postby mf_dolphin » Tue Feb 11, 2003 9:52 am

It appears that The "Too many people...." message is being generated on the " Forum Index" page. This is probably a sign of other issues rather than what it says. On every instance when this has occured (that I'm aware of) the server has been terribly slow at the same time. This may be caused by a general communication problem that causes a page request to be sent multiple times in a cascade effect. With multiple users this can lead to a waterfall type of failure. Hopefully we can get this ironed out pretty quickly :-)

I've noticed that this site seems to load much slower than the other forums sites I go to, like WxChat for instance. This one takes at least 5-10 seconds to load, whereas WxChat is done loading in 5 seconds tops except in very rare occasions. Any ideas why that might be the case? (btw I am running 56K)

Unfortunately for our dial-up users we have a fairly high graphic content to our site. We try and minimize the impact as much as possible but some impact in unavoidable. We don't restrict the use of graphics, Avatars and such so these all combine to add to the load times of the forums/sites.

I don't know if this answered you question or not but I tried :D

Can you set a size limit of your avs and sigs? that would draw down your bandwidth :)
I have 25 K per av and 50 k per sig :)

phpBB doesn't really have some of those controls. We limit the characters in a sig line but can't really control the sive of graphics very well. Uploaded Avatars are limited to 6K but off-site Avatars aren't. Right now we don't have a bandwidth (30GB) or disk problem but thanks for the suggestions!
