Talking Tropics Forum Format for 2006

#1 Postby cycloneye » Fri Apr 14, 2006 12:34 pm

The staff of administrators and moderators reached a decision about how we will run talking tropics forum.Out of the bat the first announcement is that there will be no more long thread pages at Talking Tropics forum. The longest they will get is to 10 pages and that will be it.What we will do is when a thread gets to page 10 we will lock it and create a new thread with the same name at title, example=Discussion, sat pics, models thread #1,when for sure that one gets to 10 pages we will lock it and then make a new thread of=discussion, sat pics, models thread #2.We do this to not hurt the server with the long threads that will get thousands of hits and also to not make the members lost looking for the information in those very long threads. Also we are going to do this at the advisorie and recon threads as well the recon discussion thread.

Another thing that will change is the posting of images. Some members post images that are very large that we have to scroll to look at them at the post. What we will say to the members is to post links to the images to not hurt the bandwidth of the site.

The storm2k analysts and pro mets will be posting their thoughts on the systems at the tropical analysis forum. Members will be able to participate in threads but not start new discussions in that forum. We hope this will make the best information easy to find for everyone.

We hope that with these measures the talking tropics forum will run very good as it did last year with the difference this time there will not be long threads.

The long threads where easy to save to look back on. Now theres going to be 20 or 30 threads to save to look back on.

Unfortunately we have to make compromises to keep the board running under the expected heavy load. If you'd like to donate a couple of new servers we'd be glad to take them :-)

This is a shame.

It's a bit disappointing. I thought there might have been a better solution, although it is a fine attempt.

Really... this isn't much different from last year. Also, this should make things run smoother this upcoming season.

Wow...I expected y'all to be happier. So many people complained about the super-long threads last year, I thought this was a great compromise for everyone. Oh well...we're doing what we think is best to keep the site running as smoothly and efficiently as possible during the busiest times of the year on here. I think most will come to like this way better as it will be easier to get to the information you want.

Did you all realize that when you do a search for something specific, it gives you the thread it's in. If the thread is 47 pages long, you have to look through all 47 pages to find what you're looking for. If these threads are limited to 10 pages, it will make searching for something specific MUCH easier. I don't know about most of y'all, but I use the search feature a lot! Just something to consider...

As senorepepr said this is like last years format which worked very well with now the new addition of no long threads and no large images only links have to be posted for images especially those that are superlarge ones.I thought there would be cheering all around here. :)

I'm sure the everyone is happy that there has been a desicion made on this matter, instead of it lingering. I think that they have some good ideas there and it is not that hard to click on a link to view an image. Also I'm pretty sure they are going to do a test run of this new system to see if it works better than the old one. I am anxious to see how this is going to work. As far as donating servers.. man I wish I could cause I would do it in a heartbeat. Maybe some of you out there do have some servers that could be donated to storm2k and I'm sure everyone would be very happy for that. BTW how much does a server cost either new or rebuilt? I am just happy that I have a site like this where i can post at.

How about small images resized so that you don't have to scroll horizontally?

It might also help to include the size and/or dimensions when linking to a large image--so you don't put dial up users in a "death trap."

Here are a few examples:

Tornadic Storms Midwest Loop (11,339,033 bytes | 640 x 480 pixels)

Hurricane Rita IR Loop (3,017,908 bytes | 300 x 250 pixels)

Hurricane Katrina IR Loop (10,774,946 bytes | 720 x 540 pixels)

Hurricane Ivan IR Loop (3,686,655 bytes | 290 x 218 pixels)

United States AVHRR Mosaic (5,206,263 bytes | 3199 x 2107 pixels)

You can find all that information by right clicking the image and going to properties.

Oh, and, 1 megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes.

What about posting thumbnails to the main image using a source like Image Shack?

Luis....are the guidelines set in stone for the posting of links to images? What about posting thumbnails to images with the use of Image Shack or some other comparible website?
