Got to have the Recon, Baby!

#1 Postby wxmann_91 » Sat Aug 26, 2006 12:47 am

But why isn't there anymore in the Pacific?

I recall strong TC's such as Gilma, John, Tip, etc. were measured by recon, why not now? Ioke is a very good candidate for recon, but I don't think they flew a plane in.

Is it because of money or something. I'm sure either Senorpepr or Aslkahuna would have the answer, but anybody may chime in.

I've looked thru the Ioke thread, did not find this question.

Thanks!

Undoubtedly, it was felt that going to satellite recon in the Pacific was more cost effective though someone who was in Air Weather Circus (as we called it) at the time the decision was made could explain as I thought it was stupid at the time-but then again most Government decisions are .

There is synoptic recon in the NW Pacific sometimes, they don't fly into the actual storm though. They have at least flown round Kaemi, Bopha, and Saomai so far this year.

They only do recon if the storm approaches land... (ie, Hawaii) Yes, there have been systems in the WPAC/CPAC that the Hurricane Hunters have flown into.. but that is when the gov't had money for recon flights over the CPAC.
