#1 Postby Matt-hurricanewatcher » Tue Aug 29, 2006 10:11 pm

I don't know how this is going to come across...But lets put it out there...

Would you go to Wake island in ride Ioke out if some one gave you a million dollars for doing so?

Now this quastion might not look serious, but just had to.

No, it would be against my religion-I'm a devout coward. Also, I don't have a Death Wish.

Would I be outside in the storm or inside a building? Or, would I be underground or in a bunker?

Outside in the storm...

The Jtwc says this storm has 50 foot waves right now. This thing is likely 140 to 150 knots. The island is 18 feet or 3 meters at the highest point.

My option of this is I would not do it for a billion dollars. I don't have a death wish or wish to die. But if I was lets say on the Gulf coast in a mile inland with 30 feet above sea level. With a strong enough building to protect my coward self. Then yes.

If outside, then I would not do it for 1 million. You would die.

Well if the surge overran the Island, your underground hidey hole or bunker would be underwater as well.

That's if it didn't keep water out. I'm not sure if there is anything like a water-proof underground bunker on Wake island. I don't even know if one exists, lol.

At first I thought... sure why not. Then I did some research on Wake Island...and thought maybe not!!! I don't think there are any structures on the island that are both capable of withstanding the storm surge, and the wind. But maybe..... for 5 million, with the first 1 million paid in advance so that if I did happen to die, my estate would look a whole lot better (lol). Then I'd use the other couple of million to guarantee a fast ride out of there when it was over. All in all, I think I'll just settle for a bunch of pounding rain and a few quick breezes with Ernesto tonight in St. Augustine, Florida!!!

Typhoon Ioke Churns Toward Wake Island

POSTED: 6:14 pm HST August 29, 2006
UPDATED: 6:48 pm HST August 29, 2006

HONOLULU -- Typhoon Ioke, the strongest Central Pacific tropical storm in more than a decade, continues to barrel toward recently-evacuated Wake Island.

The storm is predicted to submerge the 2.5-square-mile atoll and destroy everything on it that isn't concrete, forecasters said. National Weather Service lead forecaster Jeff Powell calls it "a monster storm."

The isle's entire population of some 200 residents left via two Air Force evacuation flights to Hawaii on Monday. All were either U.S. military personnel, defense department civilians or military contractors.

The typhoon is expected to reach Wake Island at 1 a.m. on Thursday, Hawaii time, with winds of up to 161 mph and gusts of up to 195 mph.

If someone gave me a million dollars and I was assured to be in a sturdy shelter, then yes I would.

I would just hope that at the last second it weakened or turned.

I just looked at Wake Is. on Google Earth. Very small island and flat too. I would definitely NOT do it. That island will be scoured clean.

Absolutely not. With this monster of a storm, it would completely demolish Wake Island and keep truckin' in the WPAC.

Sure, if I was guaranteed a very sturdy structure and solid windows to observe it. And electricity that wouldn't go out so I would have a computer working the whole time.
