Model Building

#1 Postby YB2010 » Thu Oct 14, 2010 1:08 am

Wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some sources for the math and physics involved in model building. Much appreciated.

The ECMWF has some good information regarding its model presented in a friendly format:
http://www.ecmwf.int/products/forecasts/guide/The_ECMWF_global_atmospheric_model.html
Otherwise, you can Google the specific model you're interested in to read more about its physics.

Hope this helps!

BTW, GFS documentation is not as pretty as the ECMWF's (understatement). For the mathematical nitty gritty, here see Chapter 2 in the 1988 documentation of the original model. More recently developed models (eg, WRF, FIM) have nicer documentation.

JMA also has pretty nice documentation for its model. See OUTLINE OF THE OPERATIONAL NUMERICAL WEATHER PREDICTION AT THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY, and for math details, section 4.2.

thank you. have finished high school a bit early and taking some time before deciding a major, so exploring possibilities. been fascinated for a while now in weather and lately global thermodynamics and obv violent weather also (I'm here right). Appreciate the suggestions and will be digging in.
