The Meaning of the "Cut" In Tropical Cyclones

I (and I'm sure several others) noticed a pretty sizeable 'cut' (or fissure looking thing, for that matter) in the central dense overcast of Typhoon Negouri as it was peaking over the Western Pacific. I believe that this little structure has been seen before in Typhoon Jelawat in 2012. The photo from the International Space Station shows it pretty clearly below. Does anyone have any idea what it entails?
