Can someone explain to me in simple terminology what all the numbers mean when a "recon" is posted?

I have to call it a night tonight...If no one else answers you tonight I'll, get to your question tomorrow.

It's easy if you just focus on a couple of numbers.

Sorry!

Here is the way to read Vortex Messages.
http://www.hurricanehunters.com/vortex.htm

This is how to read RECCO observations

This is how to read DROPs. (Dropsondes)

I hope that helps.

If I can add my two cents...

I just memorize where the wind speed and direction setions are in each type of report. Then I just look at those. I also look for pressure in dropsonde and vortex data messages.

Speaking of vortex data messages, here's a site that explains a VDM from Hurricane Ivan in pretty plain english.

Let me know if you need more.
