I'm really confused here as this dropsonde data seems fishy or I'm doing something wrong.

What seems to be wrong with it? As for the sonde itself, it could malfunction. Sondes are very momentary for the winds. The CPHC has gusts at 145 knot currently. Since I believe a sonde is perhaps around a half second, though in the software that puts it out maybe it is averaged over a longer period, this falls in line. Also, the pressure was lower than the CPHC thought.

Center sonde. If you are looking at the satellite imagery, keep in mind that might be half an hour delayed. Or longer if I forget to keep refreshing.

And another thing, I have sondes noted where they landed in Google Earth, or at least where it made it to before it terminated. If those coordinates are not available, then it shows where it was released. So that would explain the distance from the flight path.

Big storms tend to have lower pressures. Don't think it strengthened that much to have near Cat.5 winds. CDO lacks the needed cold cloud tops.

I could be wrong though.

I just don't know if the 130 knt swath on its descent is representative or not of the true 1 min intensity.

Isabel once had a dropsonde of 203 knts IIRC and it wasn't greater than 145 knts.

"The second type of operational data that HRD provides is the actual raw dropsonde observations from the Airborne Vertical Atmospheric Profiling System (AVAPS). Measurements of pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and wind are obtained at 0.5 s [2 Hz] resolution (for certain dropsonde models the wind measurements are only available at 1.0 s [1 Hz] resolution)."

You are talking about a half second wind gust perhaps, very, very momentary.

"WIND GUST is the maximum 3-second wind speed (in knots) forecast to occur within a 2-minute interval at a height of 10 meters"

So a sonde might be over a period of less than even a wind gust.

A program called Aspen might average it over several seconds though, the program that creates the raw text data and then releases it to the public. But since they give a specific level, perhaps not, or perhaps it is over a very small interval of seconds. Regardless, the sonde is definitely not reflective of the 1 minute sustained wind speed. It may not even be truly reflective a three second gust, but it would certainly be closer.

Raw sonde data from a sonde for Sandy for example. (http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/Storm_page ... sonde.html) Obs every half second. It's not all included here, but it starts off in the plane, with pressure from there. Then later it leaves the plane and then takes those obs and finally ends at the surface, or however far it makes it. Then this data goes into the Aspen program to create the WMO format text that is released here, for Air Force in the East/Central Pacific: ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/data/raw/uz/uzpn13.knhc..txt
