A very interesting system indeed. Radar imagery shows a rapidly intensifying system with an eye-like feature formed several hours before landfall. Hualien buoy recorded maximum sustained winds of 19.3 m/s and a minimum sea level pressure of 996.9 hPa. Maybe the agencies have missed a TS?

Wow, talk about coming out of nowhere. Microwave imagery also looked to have supported something classifiable.

Another candidate for postseason analysis.

This is the type of system which is very hard to forecast, very tiny and forms very close to the coast.

Kinda remind me of a system in Northern Australia way back in Feb 2014 which formed a closed defined eye (radar, microwave, and conventional sat imagery) just prior to landfall. That system was only tagged as a tropical low by BOM and Invest 95S by JTWC at that time. BOM redeemed itself by upgrading it to Tropical Cyclone in reanalysis though..

Crazy that this should have been named Chanthu and our current system 09W should be named DIanmu.

Dianmu- Goddess of lightning and thunder...sure could be developing in that monsoon trough later this week...
