Why are they waiting until 4 to issue the next advisory? I thought they were issued every four hours...

Guess is since there are no current watches/warnings for land they go back to the normal 5/11 ET schedule, i.e. every 6 hours.

No watches or warnings. Once a watch is issued for the NW Gulf Coast, then it goes back to every 3 hours.

I'd bet that they may have a special advisory if recon finds that she is a cat5.

215 PM EDT WED SEP 21 2005

DATA FROM RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT RITA HAS INTENSIFIED
A LITTLE MORE AND WINDS HAVE REACHED 150 MPH WINDS WITH A MINIMUM
PRESSURE OF 920 MB. THIS MAKES RITA A STRONG CATEGORY FOUR
HURRICANE.

153 kt flight level + 920 mb is defintely cat 5, why they keep it at 4?

Actually, 153 kt flight level is only 140 MPH surface.

So a 920mb hurricane that appears to be transitioning to annular and is about to hit higher SSTs -- anyone want to guess how low this baby will go? I wouldn't be shocked to see a sub 900 storm at some point, though obviously it'll peak long before it gets to land.
