scary to read through this. I wasn't a S2K member at the time, but I can clearly remember each of these events as they happened. Watching this storm go from a Cat. 2 to a Cat. 4 in a matter of minutes was unbelievable...as well as the change in path. When I woke up on Aug. 13th I expected 30-45mph top winds with higher gusts (may be up to 50-60mph)...but by that evening I was getting gusts into the 100-110mph range! :eek:

But the big hurricane was spelled "Charley", IIRC.

I think Charley will always be a reminder that not all hurricanes will weaken prior to landfall. I think a hurricane like Charley is often a nightmare scenario for meteorologists: a hurricane heading towards landfall suddenly undergoing rapid intensification.

Hmm...At first it was a fish, then a Horrible disaster for Tampa, then a Horrible storm for Ft. Myers. It still shows how much we don't know about track/Intensification.
