Catastrophic Flooding

#461 Postby PurdueWx80 » Mon Aug 30, 2004 7:32 pm

From Wakefield, VA NWS:

SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATE 10 TO 14 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE OCCURRED FROM
THE CITY OF RICHMOND INTO PORTIONS OF KING WILLIAM COUNTY...WITH
WIDESPREAD AMOUNTS IN THE 4 TO 8 INCH RANGE FROM CHESTERFIELD AND
CHARLES CITY COUNTIES...NORTHWARD INTO CAROLINE AND KING AND QUEEN
COUNTIES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES! ARE POSSIBLE
IN THE WARNED AREA.

The western part of Gaston blew up and remained over Richmond all day. These rainfall amounts, on top of a month of rain that has been well above normal, are likely to cause major flooding. Let's hope Frances steers clear of central VA.

Gaston TD Again

#462 Postby Steve Cosby » Mon Aug 30, 2004 8:06 pm

As it should have been all along, Gaston is a TD again.

(at least that's what TWC [Cantore] just said)

Gaston is a Tropical Storm, not a TD.

It will be a TD again at 11, NOT a TS.

It never was anything less than TD. HPC always called a TD in their advisories and TPC still called it a TD in their TWO's. TPC is taking over again because the storm didn't die off like they thought it would.

Video is incredible out of Richmond channel 6. The station reports 11.25 inches of rain today. Portions of I-95 are closed.

If you are saying that there is line of thinking that Gaston never really went below TS strength, yes, there might be some truth in that statement.

Otherwise, officially, it is a TD.

Well, the NHC site now says it is a Tropical Storm - that's what I was going by.

That is a leftover heading from the day that they handed it off to the HPC.

Still, an argument could be made.

The last hour that buoy mentioned reported 37kt winds sustained winds. That's a TS. Also on the NHC site, in now says "Tropical Storm Gaston" instead of TD Gastion.

Actually, I'm almost 100% sure it said Tropical Depression Gaston earlier today. The title was also black, not pink.

Thunder -
You are correct about the heading "Tropical Storm Gaston" - it said TD Gaston no more than an hour ago in the same place...

Can't believe how vigilant this storm has been seeing as though it has been inland for so long.

Gaston might as well be a tropical storm again lol

I'm up in Norfolk now. We have sustained winds around 30 with higher gusts. Gaston of course has been over land a while but its still packing a punch, it was blowing my car all over the road coming back from the gym.

Should be a reconfirmed TS at 11 - You can't really expect an upgrade over land, but it is near Chesapeke bay where SST's should be 80 ish.

I will keep trying to check in, but the remarkably intense Hurricane Hermine may wipe me out here - she is heading right for me and I am scared out of my mind!!!!!!!!

Ahem...

With regards to Gaston...
Do you expect any intesification once in the drink for a few hours? The SST's are rather warm where it is exiting (at least in the bay), and this has happened before (rarely)...

That same buoy is now causing winds 43kts (50mph) sustained and gusts to 50kts (58mph)! This is definitely a TS.

Did you notice the history of 30 kts + sustained over the past six hours?

Definately a TS and possibly intensifying even before it hits the open water

I didn't notice a SST reading at that buoy but I didn't look too deeply. Is the SST 80+ in the area?

Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm? That tis the question!

No matter what it is, that thing looked incredible over land. It honestly looked like a Tropical Storm all day.

I would say it's an interesting night up on the east coast and New England area.

This is impressive but the anemometer is over 40 meters above sea level, so surface winds are probably closer to 35 kts. I think more intensification is likely, especially over the Bay.
