Is that the same Alex? I remember they said it would be absorbed by another extratropical system right after its final advisory. Still, nice spin!

It's mostly Alex. I've been following him for several days now as it tracked across the Atlantic. The models now have him spinning in circles W of the UK for a few days as strong high pressure over Scandinavia blocks it from moving eastward.

Actually that is just an extratropical low in the Atlantic.... follow a loop and the remnants of Alex move towards Portugal(with some energy being absorbed into that other low) but it is not Alex

I see what you're saying, but looking at satellite imagery from the past week from both MET 7 and DMSP, it shows a bulk of the moisture pushing into the Iberian Peninsula which is now the cold front of the baroclinic system. (See above image from the USAFE OWS) As for the bulk of the vorticity from Alex, it merged with a weaker, secondary low and deepened quite a bit.

This is also confirmed by UK Met Office and USAFE Wx Squadron bulletins as well as the DWD analysis.

(The 995mb low SW of Greenland on the 5th became the 995mb low SW of Iceland. The 1000mb low SW of Greenland today came from Canada. Alex is south of this.)

(The low SW of Iceland makes little progress this period as Alex and the 1000mb low move toward the Iberian Peninsula.)

http://www.met.fu-berlin.de/de/wetter/m ... 040808.gif
(The 995mb low remains stationary as the 1000mb low and Alex merge, deepening into a 975mb low.)

Yea I can see what you are saying as well.... however i think if one were to ask the question where did Alex go after crossing the Atlantic, you might have to say the actual remnants made their way towards Portugal, but a strong extratropical low helped absorb some of the energy into it further north.

I mostly agree there. I wouldn't call it a strong extratropical low since it was only as much as 5mb deeper than Alex when it left the Canadian coast and then weakened to 1000mb (nearly the same as Alex) as it tracked across the North Atlantic. Regardless, that low deepened significantly once Alex merged with it. However, yes, part of Alex is in the cold front over Portugal and Spain, which is part of the same baroclinic system as the extratropical low.

Great image of sheared Alex. I know, it has been 6 years but it's still a great picture! That little nothing became a major hurricane! Also, Alex is back this year!
