New Tropical Storm in west Pacific - named Chanthu

#1 Postby FWBHurricane » Fri Jun 11, 2004 4:27 am

This new storm developed after it crossed the Philippines and strengthened. moving WNW at 6mph. By tomorrow its suppost to be up to Typhoon strength heading for the coast of Vietnam. By that time it will quickly turn to the north heading for the coast of china, towards the City of Nanning in southwest China. She will be pretty strong, a minimal Category One Typhoon.

Saturday I'll provide a link to a weather station on Vietnam coast(Da Nang) which may be directly hit by the storm in @48hrs. Currently it's having trouble intensifing in easterly shear but as it gains some northerly component to it's track the environment should improve per (Joint typhoon centers discussion) to allow intensifacation to typhoon strength.

The typhoon has tracked more westerly in last several hrs. which will bring it in south of Da Nang which is closest reporting station to landfall. The new JTC track takes it well south of that location. Here's a link to the station, maybe it will still get good winds being north of the center

Looks like Typhoon Chanthu made landfall a couple of hours ago, and the pressures are beginning to rise on the coast. The typhoon hit not too far north of Quy Nhon, which did not report strong winds, and had a minimum pressure of 995 MB or so. Da Nang, to the north, reported a minimum pressure of 1005 MB and light winds, as seen by the link above. The strongest part of the storm, up to 75 knots, probably affected the areas in between.

Thank you for the information. I just learned something...probably a little late in life but learned it none the less. I didn't realize that you could get observations from worldwide reporting stations, through the National Weather Service. I appreciate the help. I just never thought to try the NWS for the information.

Thanks

So far I've found this...

Ha Noi, June 11 (VNA) - A tropical low pressure has developed into a typhoon heading to the coast of central Viet Nam.

The storm, named Chanthu, is the second typhoon in the East Sea and the fifth in the Western Pacific region this year, according to the central hydro-meteorological bureau.

This morning the typhoon is located at 12.4 degrees northern latitude and 116.2 degrees eastern longitude, 880 km southeast of central Viet Nam. It is packing strong winds of 62-88 km per hour.

It is forecast to intensify in next 24 hours, heading in a west-northern west direction with a speed of 15 km per hour. The winds will be gusting up to 90 km per hour at its centre around Truong Sa (Spratly) islands late Friday.-Enditem

Typhoon kills seven in Vietnam, seven remain missing

#11 Postby senorpepr » Mon Jun 14, 2004 7:21 am

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Typhoon Chanthu killed seven people and left seven more missing when it swept through central Vietnam over the weekend, officials said Monday.

Five fishermen were killed when their boat sank Saturday off the coast of Binh Dinh province, some 1,050 kilometers (650 miles) south of Hanoi, said an official from the provincial floods and storms control bureau, who identified himself only as Tuan.

Another man, who was washing his feet in a river, drowned after being sucked in by the strong current. A sixth fisherman was killed when strong winds forced two fishing boats against the dock, crushing him between them, he said.

The typhoon also injured five people and destroyed or damaged more than 180 houses in the province.

In neighboring Danang and Quang Ngai province, seven fishermen were reported missing, officials there said.

No damage estimates were available.

The National Center for Meteorology said the typhoon, which formed in the South China Sea, hit central Vietnam on Saturday afternoon and died down that night.

Vietnam is prone to typhoons and floods, which kill hundreds of people each year.
