If there is any good news, it looks like from satellite and recon obs that the eye is filling in pretty quickly due to land interaction. I am hopeful that the truly catastrophic winds were confined to a small area near the coast. Nonetheless, Maria is still an extremely dangerous hurricane. The threat from flooding, potential landslides, and additional wind damage is very serious.

Thank you SouthDade. I agree that I pray the catastrophic winds were confined to near the coast. However, the storm surge is going to be devastating. I am extremely gut-wrenched and crushed seeing what is happening to Puerto Rico early this morning.

Praying for everyone on the island of Puerto Rico!! Praying for those later in the path in the Southeastern Bahamas as well.

Huge increase in colder cloud tops around the outer eyewall last hour on goes 16. I'm not sure the dying inner eyewall is the only thing. What winds are in the outer eyewall?

Nonesense, radar velocities at landfall was showing 150-190 knot winds just above the surface, so surface winds were easily 150 mph.

Simply looked at recon data from when it was still off shore, saw SFMR maxing out in the cat 3 range, saw radar presentation degrading slightly, and commented on what I saw. Idk what I did wrong.

No way. This was at least a category four storm at landfall. Radar velocities prior to landfall showed that as well. It looks like the core is weakening relatively quickly due to land interaction. This storm is still incredibly dangerous.

Strongest winds were already over PR by the time recon reached Maria. Recon can't fly over land, and the strongest winds were confined to a small area. Also agree this was a Cat 4 based on radar, IMO.
