recon pass.. pressure rising fast.. winds are not.. looks like an offial cat 5 landfall. but I see nothing to support 160. a few dropsondes readings at higher altitudes and some suspect 140 kt doppler velocites. again none the less its going to be just as destructive !

No, is not militarized anymore. Vieques is like any other town of the island. They have registered winds of 115 MPH right now.

Obviously NW Eyewall is the strongest portion of the storm.
Recon just sampled SW side, 52 mm/hr rain rate.
PR is going to take Maria's full fury.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone in the path of this monster.

With the much larger eye now that the inner has dissipated, it is actually more likely that San Juan may receive a direct hit from it, though it should be slightly weaker.

it is trying to make a last minute come back.. FL winds have increased. SFMR are still LOW but typically the winds will mix down. and there is land all around SFMR in that area might be suspect.

one thing is for sure the wind field has increased a lot !!

I’m measuring roughly 26 miles wide on the eye versus about 31 miles 45 minutes ago.. eye is contracting rapidly.

the outer eye has begun to really really contract fast each few images you can see it... that will increase winds drastically all by itself without the pressure falling..

During most of Maria's existence the 700 mb flight level winds were equal or even less than the measured SFMR surface winds. Since it has just completed the eyewall replacement it is just a matter of time that these 140-146 knot flt level winds mix down to the surface. In my opinion, this justly supports maintaining Maria as a 140 knot category 5 hurricane.

last pass pressure has stopped climbing. and actually might be lower around 915 since there was 33kts of wind...

The entire east coast of PR is just being devastated right now.. this is some serious crap right now.. I have not seen such heavy eyewall convection .. it must be crazy.. ( wish I was there ) but saddened by all the destruction that is happeing right now.
