Why does S2K show Maria as a cat 5 on the graphic but NHC says it's a cat 4?

It displays as a Category 4 for me right now.

Basically, the last NHC advisory had winds of 135 knots which converts to just over 155 mph. The graphic displays everything over 155 mph as Category 5 which is the source of the error.

In your house?

Yes... ground level.

Sure hope you have a safer room to get into... or a higher floor. Take care!

One of the secretaries here at the school where I work has an aunt in Puerto Rico. She had a text from her this morning. Her aunt lives in one of those concrete houses but went down the street to stay with a friend (no knowledge of the build of friend's house) her text this morning said the house was shaking and some houses around them were coming down.
She lives in Santa Juanita, Bayamon. From what I can tell on a map that is very close to the eyewall.

If anyone has any knowledge of what is happening there please let me know. Our secretary is beside herself with worry.

Well yeah this got bad pretty quick yesterday yesterday evening for Puerto Rico...they could have definately done without the wind field expansion. I will take a 5 mile wide 5 over a 40 mile wide 4 any day. Wishing our Puerto Rico friends safety and sending warm vibes. Anxious to hear some news from st croix

I'm the type that always tried to find a little humor. But am I the only one finding humor in the irony of the West Side story parallels? "I just met a girl named Maria"..."always the hurricanes blowing" ...ha, anyway all the characters are Puerto Rican (well the characters, not the actors, Natalie wood was def not Puerto Rican). ANyway, just a little hurricane humor.

Here's what rainfall rates of 5-8 inches an hour can do:

Hard to be sure of this, but it looks like Maria has really hooked west over the last couple of hours. Perhaps some terrain effects going on here. Looks like the whole island may get the core at this rate :(

Has there ever been a year with 3 cat 4 landfalls on US soil counting PR and territories? I know 2 CONUS cat 4 + landfalls was tied with irma and Harvey already.

Also curious if there's ever been a season with 2 cat 5 landfalls in the Atlantic basin?

Not that I'm aware of.

It wouldn't be the first one, here in DR we are hoping it's not Georges 2.0.

Yeah i think there's a real danger that Maria doesn't gain enough latitude coming off PR and can still impact the DR.

The NHC 10am plot is 18.4N 66.4 W in northern Puerto Coast.

What is that feature on the southern coast moving west? It looks like the center on satellite but apparently it isn't.
