Where can we get sandbags? I'm on maui... anyone know?

I did a Google search real quick. There's something called GP Roadway solutions that seems to sell sandbags. Their Maui branch is located on 23 La'a street in Kahului.
Said to call first though if you want them pre-filled.
Phone number for that branch: (808) 873-7461

Don't know if that is close to you or not though.

Yes! Thank you so much!

I think the best case scenario by now is for Lane to be rip apart by the Big Island. At least they can evacuate residents in the landfall area to the leeward side.

Also the Big Island, especially the southern coast, isn't very heavily populated. A major hurricane there would be devastating for that area, but it would likely weaken to a tropical storm even before reaching Maui. The nightmare scenario is still in play too (direct hit on Oahu) and that would keep it away from the Big Island far enough to prevent land interaction.

No problem. I would definitely call first because it specified pre-filled bags required advance notice, and with Lane who knows how many people are preparing already and putting in orders.
I should add their hours of operation said 7am-4pm. I'm not quite sure what time it is there as I'm located in the Midwest where it is currently 631pm.

I’m not at all saying that this will be anything like Maria from a wind impact aspect, but fresh water flooding/landslide issues are a major concern. I hope FEMA has gotten more efficient at providing disaster related supplies than last year. Hawaii is thousands of miles from any kind of help that will be needed assuming the worst happens.

It would be interesting to see how does the terrain of Big Island affect Lane. I don't think there has ever been a case of major hurricane encountering landmass as small and elevated as the Big Island. We are talking about 13,800 ft volcanos on an Island similar to the size of Porto Rico.

Hopefully that and the cooler water will reduce the intensity.
Hawaii gets hurricanes so infrequently there is a lot of civilian and military infrastructure that is not very wind and torrential flood tolerant. Along with the other hurricane preps I would put gallon jugs of water in the freezer now, if you are expecting power outages in your area.

The rainfall threat wouldn't go down at all if this made landfall on the Big Island and got torn apart, correct?

Lanes inflow will be pulling cooler dryer air from north of the islands

Well, the rainfall effects would be particularly catastrophic for the big island. Not to mention many locations are well above sea level, and would likely see much stronger winds that are above the surface.

BTW, I’m no expert of the Hawaiian topography, but it’s not an unreasonable assumption that the mountainous/volcanic terrain would have a significant orographic influence on rainfall totals.

The rainfall numbers on Big Island will go crazy if Lane crashes into the island directly. We could see 30+inches easily.

Glad to see people are taking this threat seriously.

Are you buying sandbags too?

I live on a hill. Our yard floods sometimes but not to the point where it comes into the house. Probably will skip the sandbags.

With the data they have, I'm really surprised they didn't go CAT 5. I guess they are afraid to pull the trigger lol.

If CPHC still plans to keep it as a CAT4 at 5PM HST, I fails to understand their logic.
