Utility contractors are usually out within 2 days with chainsaw gangs moving down the streets and cutting obstacles into manageable pieces. I wouldn’t risk it with kids and downed power lines, but that’s me.

We were trapped at the end of our street last year during Irma w downed power lines and trees.

Although I had a chainsaw, we didn't risk self clearing we waited for utility crews

Flo in no hurry - nearly stalled out between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. Time to go Florence.

Power is out and they are under a boil water advisory which they can’t do since they have no power. They can’t leave their house due to power lines and trees blocking both ends of the road. The power company said they won’t be out there for another 1-2 days at the earliest due to all the rain, flooding and trees down everywhere plus the winds. Very bad situation and I’m hoping things improve soon. This is the ugly side of hurricanes that people don’t think about and have no idea what it’s like until they or family members go through it.

Might be a day or two but If they end up staying, Red Cross and others will drive around with provisions and meals. Biggest issue is having water. Not everyone has the means and I can imagine with 5 kids, things are expensive. But you gotta be prepared for more than 2 days just in case. They’ll know next time, and hopefully they will be fine.
5 days minimum hurricane supplies, water is cheap or freeze it, fill up empty jugs

He was broadcasting live from a parking garage in Wilmington last night when the eyeball went through.

I can't stop laughing because I'm imagining a giant eyeball going over Wilmington

Edit: after reading the previous posts, not so much laughing anymore

After Irma we were on generator for about a week but many people that got caught unprepared walked to shelters or called hotlines for transportation. In the case of Irma fortunately the Walmarts and Publix stores opened up after a few days so those of us that sheltered in place could restock food. NC doesn't get this kind of crisis as often as Florida so there will probably be a lot more load on the shelter system.

Sounds like flooding is bad as expected. That band near new Bern and Morehead C to jacksonville just barely moved today. They are lucky the actual rainfall rates haven’t been worse Cuz they have racked up enough just from the stationary heaviest bands. Of course they have the prolonged surge issue that Houston did not have. So they are different set ups. These storms training thru Eastern NC have not yet shown a high propensity for lightning and extreme rainfall rates as some of the Harvey bands did.(or at least not during the day today) It seemed like Harvey’s bands came in waves and worsened at night. I would not be surprised if that occurs tonight with Flo. At some point i expect we will see a high cape tail form and train over somebody and when it does look out. Either way it all looks a mess.

Impossible. It was only a Category 1...

Turns out water came in and caused the teak wood to cave in from the bottom. .

It is entirely possible for Rising water to lift a house off its foundation.

I'm not a meteorologist, I'm an electronics engineer. While I can probably fix your toaster oven, you're not going to learn about storms from me!

New Mexico had no hurricanes. Then I moved to NC right before Fran.....

That’s why I always ensure I have hurricane whiskey, hurricane White Russians, and hurricane weed as backups like the good Boyscout I am.

Always be prepared!

Is there a list of rainfall totals so far? (or can someone direct me to where the best place to find them is?)

https://nc.water.usgs.gov/realtime/rainfall.php

This is what I've been using, but I believe a Pro Met posted earlier today that there is concern that some of the USGS gauges are malfunctioning and over recording rain.

Watching the BP gas station canopy come down was more exciting that the Weather Channel's on scene reporting.

Yeah, I got a bit suspicious when they were showing some reporter in a parking lot in Myrtle Beach who looked like he was having trouble standing up, and then they show the wind speed was 50 mph.

Another place is here:

But they don't have the USGS totals. This is what comes from NOAA.

If it was on stilts on the beach, the surge and waves with relentless rain/wind for hours on end can cause a house to go over.

Hard to tell because of the gap of radar coverage (Wilmington radar offline until further notice) but it looks like the center is clearing out a bit over land. It's barely on water's edge as it approaches Myrtle Beach.

Yikes, that will stir up quite a bit of drama.
