130-135kts right now. Will need recon for anything higher.

Wow, Sam might be trying to become a Cat 5. Miss Piggy’s first pass will probably be the most anticipated recon pass since the night Eta went T#8.0 — and Sam might be close to Eta’s intensity during that flight.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Re: ATL: SAM - Hurricane - Discussion
Might not be a cat 5 but it sure looks like a high end cat 4 super typhoon (150mph) type system. What's up with the outflow/arc clouds racing out well away from the system? Those types of clouds in lesser systems are frequently referenced to bolster a weak/weakening trend. kind of strange to see them in such a high end and strengthening system

Every time I come back to look at Sam, he's looking better and better. I'm willing to bet by Recon he's around 130 kts.

I don't trust sattilite estimates, they are very subjective and often misleading with intense storms. I'm glad we have recon headed out there to tell us what's actually happening.

I'd personally say around 135 kts, seems to be more organized/better looking core than most 130 kt systems I've seen. Plus sam looks much better than matthew and lorenzo.

I think we can safely say Matthew wasn't a Cat 5 at this point.

Yeah not to get off-topic, but Matthew definitely needs some reanalysis with the knowledge we gained of SFMR since then.

I second this, Matthew legit looked like a storm that was kicked in the face by a bull

I know we will get an advisory based on Dvorak and likely conservative. If Recon finds something dramatically different, a Special Advisory around 6 pm is certainly possible.

I think we can say this is safely not an Eta case due to its much more stable structure than Eta. Also when was the last time we saw such a thick eyewall in the Atlantic?

Yessir, and guess what, this is almost as visually stunning (in the sense you just stare at Sam in awe) and beautiful as Irma!
