Thank you Storm 2K!

I have loved meteorology, especially tropical cyclones, ever since I was seven-years-old. Just this week I successfully defended my master's thesis in meterology (focusing on tropical cyclones) at Penn State. I'm continuing at Penn State and starting my PhD work this summer.

I want to give a big Thank You to all the people on Storm 2K from whom I have learned so much. It has been an excellent experience and opportunity to gain knowledge from professional meteorolgists and other experienced weatherwatchers.

I think you more than deserve a color change to your name tag!

Out of curiosity, what was your thesis on exactly?

Were you at AMS in Austin?

Thank you both!

I have not been to an AMS since 2010 in Atlanta, but I imagine I will be presenting my research fairly soon. In the next couple of weeks I'm going to start the process of getting some of my research into a form for submission to journals. Not certain yet to which I will be submitting it.

In the thesis I studied the distribution of thermodynamic scalars (temperature, moisture, entropy) in the tropical cyclone boundary layer. I also calculated radial flux profiles.

In the second part of my thesis I used some of the observed thermodynamic conditions from the first part to tweak calculations of Potential Intensity.

Overall, the results were pretty neat, and indicated to me that understanding the energy input into a tropical cyclone from the ocean-air interaction is one of the most difficult aspects of understanding intensity changes.
