Nuking Hurricanes...

#1 Postby Graham1973 » Fri Jan 10, 2014 9:25 pm

Just spotted this rather interesting blog post discussing 1950s proposals to use nuclear weapons to steer and/or dispurse hurricanes, it turns out to be somewhat more nuanced than you might think...

It is the (semi-)official policy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that we should not try to nuke hurricanes. (No, seriously, it is.)

We were not always so unambitious.

You can't just blast a hurricane apart with a hydrogen bomb. ven an H-bomb doesn't pack enough energy; a typical hurricane puts out the equivalent of ten megatons every twenty minutes. Manmade devices just can't compete with the forces of nature - or can they?

Glad this was never tried. I don't like the idea of the radioactivity and fallout that might have occurred and been carried to who knows where.
