Even though sirens are loud up close and on a clear day can be heard up to 3 miles away, during a storm with rain, wind, hail, the distance drops to 1 mile or less.
Although they're great to have in a tornado-prone community, their intention is to alert people who are outside. They should not be relied upon to alert you in your home, particularly if you're asleep, as many folks around here found out 2 months ago. Only that handy, dandy NOAA radio will.
