Child abducted, mother fatally shot in Bloomfield
Friday, January 13, 2006
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Police have issued an Amber Child Abduction Alert for a 1-year-old girl taken from Bloomfield after her mother was fatally shot early this morning.
Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania State Police are searching for Rahsann Coles, an African-American baby with black hair, who weighs 30 pounds and was wearing blue jeans and a pink top. She was last seen in the 200 block of Edmond Street at 2:55 a.m.
She was reported abducted by Todd D. Ballard, 29, 6 foot 2 inches, 200 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, driving an older white Lincoln sedan or a two-door, older blue Chevy Blazer.
Mr. Ballard is a suspect in the shooting death of the baby's mother, Jamie Coles, 24, of Bloomfield. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:55 a.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office.
Ms. Coles had been staying with her parents for the past two weeks because of ongoing domestic problems with Mr. Ballard, according to Pittsburgh homicide detectives.
Police Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said today, "I think this time the victim was trying to make a complete break."
Ms. Coles' stepfather was awakened at about 2 a.m. by the sound of arguing and then heard Ms. Coles beg Mr. Ballard not to shoot the baby. The stepfather ran downstairs but was confronted by Mr. Ballard, who had a gun and chased him back upstairs.
Mr. Ballard then left, and when the stepfather came downstairs he found Ms. Coles shot and the child gone. He called 911. Anyone with information about the abduction should immediately contact the police by calling 911.
Cmdr. Bryant today called for Mr. Ballard, who is from the Verona area, to surrender and to not harm the child. She said police waited until after 5 a.m. to issue the Amber Alert because they did not have good clothing or vehicle descriptions and weren't sure he had the child.
