That's the first time I've seen that quote.

There have been reports that it could have been a mine explosion:

Does anyone know when they are planning to raise the ship for examination?

Cryomaniac, that came from the link that cyloneye posted, but the story is not there now it is this one just posted 27 minutes ago -
N. Korea warns U.S., S. Korea over border
Pyongyang threatens ‘unpredictable incidents’ for disturbing security
updated 27 minutes ago
SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea warned the U.S. and South Korea of "unpredictable incidents" Monday after it says the allied nations have been disturbing security at a buffer zone bisecting the peninsula.

Monday's warning came after a South Korean military ship sank Saturday due to an unexplained explosion onboard. The ship was near the disputed sea border with North Korea, though South Korean and U.S. officials say they have seen nothing that suggests any North Korean involvement.

The statement by the North's military accused South Korea of staging anti-North Korea "psychological warfare" in the demilitarized zone and allowing journalists to visit there.

I am bumping this thread because the big question arises after South Korea accused the North of sinking a ship, what will occur with the talks about the nuclear issue? And what consequenses will this cause to not continue the talks?

Of course the talks will continue, after all when everyone is talking there's less likelihood of somebody doing something rash. After all that worked really well in the Fall of 1941 didn't it? (Yeah, right)

The thread is bumped from deep pages as there is important news about a big possibility that North Korea has a new plant running and is enriching uranium. IMO,this is a very serious situation that has to be resolved before anything bad occurs.

(CNN) -- A U.S. State Department team was traveling to South Korea on Sunday after a U.S. scientist reported that North Korea has a new uranium enrichment facility.

North Korean officials said the facility is operating and producing low-enriched uranium, according to Stanford University professor Siegfried S. Hecker. The scientist posted a report of his November 12 visit to the Yongbyon, North Korea, facility on the university's website Saturday.

The enrichment facility is comprised of 2,000 centrifuges, according to Hecker's report.

They appear to be designed for nuclear power production, "not to boost North Korea's military capability," Hecker says.

The artillery attack by North Korea may be a sideshow to the much bigger and more dangerous issue and that is the nuclear issue. Will the talks now be occuring with more urgency after the latest incident and after the revelation of a new plant that is enriching uranium?

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/11/23 ... ks-nkorea/

BEIJING – A U.S. envoy on Tuesday ruled out resuming six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea while it works on a new uranium facility — even as the North's patron China called for restarting the discussions.

Bosworth has been conducting hurried consultations with North Korea's neighbors, including China, after a U.S. nuclear scientist reported visiting the new sophisticated uranium enrichment plant that could improve North Korea's ability to make and deliver nuclear weapons.

Bosworth said that North Korea's work on the new facility makes it impossible to resume the negotiations on its nuclear disarmament.

"Needless to say, we regard this development with great seriousness," Bosworth told reporters at a Tokyo hotel. "We do not contemplate resuming negotiations while active programs are under way or while there is a possibility that North Koreans will test another nuclear device or test a missile."

It will bump up tensions, but it will take more for South Korea to attack. South Korea/US would win the war, but Seoul would be destroyed.

North Korea has very long range missiles some of them may reach the US.Imagine those with nuclear warheads.

Image

SHORT-RANGE MISSILES
North Korea has a variety of short-range missiles. The KN-02 is thought to be the most accurate, but its range - around 100-120km - is the shortest.

The KN-02 missile could be aimed at key targets in South Korea such as military installations south of the border.

The Scud-B and C have ranges of 300km and 500km respectively. It is thought that these missiles could deliver conventional warheads.

The Scud-B and C have both been tested and deployed. These missiles would enable North Korea to strike any area in South Korea.

NODONG MISSILE
The Nodong missile is thought to have a range of around 1,300km and could potentially carry a nuclear warhead, though North Korea has not yet developed the technology to build a nuclear warhead for any of its missiles.

However, this missile is only thought to have been tested twice and it is not accurate. A March 2006 report, by the US Center for Non-proliferation Studies, said it had a 'circular error probable' of 2km to 4km, meaning that half of the missiles fired would fall outside a circle of that radius.

The Nodong has the range to strike most of Japan but not with any accuracy. If it were fired on a military target, its inaccuracy could lead to high levels of civilian casualties.

TAEPODONG-1 MISSILE
The Taepodong-1 is a two-stage missile comprising Nodong and Scud parts and can reach a distance of 2,900km.

With this range it would be able to reach US bases on Okinawa but the missile is thought to be even less accurate than the Nodong.

But the missile must be fired from a fixed location and has a long preparation time, meaning that potential launches could be detected.

North Korea tested a Taepodong-1 in August 1998, firing a missile over northern Japan.

TAEPODONG-2 MISSILE
The Taepodong-2 long-range missile is estimated to have a range of between 4,000km and 10,000km and, like the Taepodong-1, it requires a fixed launch site.

The first launch of the missile, in July 2006, appeared to be a failure after it crashed within seconds of launch - according to US sources.

If the missile was successfully launched, the increased power of the Taepodong-2 could put the UK, Australia, and even the US mid-west within range.

However, it could only carry a small payload to its maximum range and is not thought to be particularly accurate.

Defence experts say that the original Taepodong-2 is now being replaced by a newer model, which can have two or three stages giving it an extended range of up to 15,000km.

The three-stage Taepodong-2 was used in a failed attempt to launch a satellite in April 2009. The launch was widely condemned by the US and South Korea, among others, as cover for a long-range missile test.

North Korea making tunnels to have once again Nuclear Tests?

North Korea has started digging tunnels at its nuclear test site in apparent preparation for a third atomic detonation, a report said Sunday. The North started building at least two new tunnels at Punggye-ri in the northeastern province of North Hamgyong for a possible underground atomic test, Yonhap news agency said, citing a senior Seoul official. The communist nation conducted its first two nuclear tests, in October 2006 and May 2009, in Punggye-ri, the second coming the month after it walked out of six-party regional nuclear disarmament talks. "It is obvious evidence that it (the North) is preparing a third nuclear test," said the unnamed official quoted by Yonhap. Pyongyang is building more than one tunnel to choose the best one for a possible test, as tunnels cannot be reused after a nuclear test blast, the official was quoted as saying. The official added the possible test would probably be carried out using material from the North's plutonium stockpile, which Seoul and Washington estimate to be enough for six to eight bombs. The nuclear-armed North in November disclosed an apparently operational uranium enrichment plant to visiting US experts, heightening regional security fears. Pyongyang claims the programme is for peaceful energy development. But outside experts have said it could easily be converted to produce weapons-grade uranium, giving the North a potential second way of making atomic bombs. Security concerns heightened further after recent satellite images showed Pyongyang was taking steps to test a missile that could eventually reach the US. An image posted on the website of US defence information group GlobalSecurity.org showed a completed missile launch tower at the North's Tongchang-ri base on the west coast. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates warned last month that North Korea could have missiles within five years that would directly threaten the United States.

After the death of Kim-Jong II the big question is,what will happen with the nuclear arsenal that they have and that is why South Korea is on high alert.

North Korea suspends nuclear activities

Is a first good step. IMO,now they have to dismantle all the program to be 100% credible about their decision.

As the population suffers widespread malnutrition, North Korea has agreed to suspend uranium enrichment and put a moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests in exchange for 240,000 metric tons of food and the promise for potentially more to come.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland announced Wednesday that the North has agreed to allow International Atomic Energy Inspectors to verify and monitor the moratorium on uranium enrichment and confirm disablement of its nuclear reactor at Yongbyon.

North Korea moves rocket to launch site

After a quiet period in this standoff, things are heating up again.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea has moved a long-range rocket to its northwestern launch site in preparation for a launch next month, South Korean officials said Sunday, as Pyongyang pushes ahead with plans that Washington says are a cover for testing long-range missile systems.

BREAKING NEWS=North Korea Launches Rocket

Now let's see what happens.

DEVELOPING - North Korea launched a rocket Friday, US officials confirm, in what the U.S. and its allies consider an attempt to test long-range missile technology. It is unclear at this time if the launch was successful.

The launch window for what North Korea says is an observation satellite began Thursday and extended through Monday. The launch window was timed during a week aimed at celebrating Sunday's centennial birth of Kim Ill Sung, the country's late founder. Events also include high-level meetings where new leader Kim Jong Un has received at least three new titles to further cement his rule.

The United States, Japan, Britain, Russia and others say the launch would be a provocation and would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions banning North Korea from developing its nuclear and missile programs. Experts say the Unha-3 carrier is similar to the type of rocket that could be used to fire a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead to strike the U.S. or other targets.
