I think Humberto has to be the most underestimated storm of the season. From it getting dropped as an invest 90L to its strength on landfall. I really think anything that forms in the hot water of the gulf should never be shrugged off.

Now I'm waiting to see what he does when he gets over here. Will he mow us over on the way back to the gulf? We had a really strong squally storm here about 9:30 this am.

Thats easily the case HeeBGBz, i think very few even expected it to reach strong tropical storm force, yet alone a midlevel category-1 hurricane!

Will be very interesting to see if it heads back into the gulf and does an Ivan. will also be interesting to see if there is much left of this system by the time it MAy get back into the gulf.

But with the conditions in the GOM, a naked swirl could redevelop in a hurry too!

I was expecting 65mph storm at landfall, never would have imagined a hurricane, this is really bad that a lot of people have been caught off guard.

I GUESSED right at @ 9:45 am yesterday( page 13), that puts me getting it right about 16% of time. yeah me.

You were the first one to get it right...quite a few got on the bandwagon as the afternoon rolled on and the cloud formation became clearer.

From a very devoted and addicted storm2k lurker, who only registered recently (just in case posting became a necessity), this was my favorite post:

Derek Ortt wrote:Hurricane WARNING needed IMMEDIATELY from galveston to the TX/LA Border

At the time, Derek's post could not have been more accurate in it's urgency.

I am praying for the best... for everyone in the area of Humberto.

We really need to watch over the next 24hrs just how deep the trough can drop and also how strong the ridge moves in from the NW and how strong it is at the times. aybe the worst case would for it to stall and just dump all its rain for several days on the same place, though equally if it goes get out into the gulf again then as long it still has its LLC then it could readily re-develop again as nothing much has changed since last night in terms of condtions.

Is it me or does it look like the CDO it's had, is now being blown off to the NE of the LLC?

ya, derek's comments where correct with the cane warnings. Thing is, there should have been ATLEAST watches up. Im sorry, they had alll the data in the world to tell them that this was getting its act together very quickly.

Correct, his warning statement was very much needed as soon as the first data came in supporting a hurricane. The problem was that it was after midnight and many were asleep making it hard to get out.

One idea I can think of is for such rapid intensification changes to be allowed to be broadcast on NOAA Weather Radios like a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning, as they set off a special tone instantly to wake people up. Even though the winds did not quite warrant the "Extreme Wind Warning", the abrupt changes warranted special attention. Currently, they just get bogged down with the hurricane local statements.

Radar was on eclipse when it landfalled, and the radar shot (GR3 or whatever) is about 4 pages back.

Rain's over with, the skies are clearing. According to the airport we officially had about 2.5" of rain but the radar precip estimates show 5-6".

Ahhhh...last night was great! A few of us stayed up all night such as Wind runner, etc. I didn't realize that we were looking at history. I did record sat pics and radars of the landfall from TX and LA. I will post a link later.
